If you are part of the military, knowing how to read and write in "military time" is essential. But for civilians not in the Army or Navy, is it still necessary to understand it? The short answer is "no." Knowing military time will not give civilians an advantage in any field, as many people tend to think. While getting familiar with this system is helpful for quick adjustments in certain scenarios, such as when travelling overseas, it isn't a must nowadays.
It is important to understand that the concept of writing and reading time in a 24-hour clock instead of the traditional 12-hour clock was only developed due to its practicality for military purposes. It offers accuracy and reduces confusion. Of course, some civilians might be familiar with this system since they may have encountered it at some point during their education or job experience. So why has this system become so popular among civilians now?
The answer lies mainly in its convenience. In today's world where technology is king, things are advancing quickly and the language of software and other communication tools tends to feature a 24-hour format — most commonly used by telecommunications networks — incorporating a combination of two digits representing hours (e.g., 09:00) and two digits representing minutes (e.g., 16:30). This way of designating time makes our lives easier when setting dates for meetings or trying to book airline tickets online as you can properly identify what time your flight will depart or arrive as oppose to counting out hours from 12:00 AM etc...
